Team Formation and Player Placement
One of the most common questions we receive from families is how teams are put together. Here is an overview of how KBHA forms teams and places players each season.
New for 2027: Balancing Games
Starting in the 2027 season, KBHA will be introducing balancing games at the beginning of the year. This means teams will have structured early-season floor time specifically aimed at giving coaches and the association a chance to assess team balance and make adjustments where needed. Our goal is to make each division as competitive and fun as possible for everyone involved.
All players, both new and returning, take part in these balancing sessions before the season begins. Skill levels can change from year to year as players grow, develop, and put in work off the floor. Evaluating everyone ensures that each player is placed on a team where they can have a positive, competitive, and enjoyable season.

Competitive (New for 2027)
Team Formation
The competitive stream isn't a separate season-long team, every player plays in the regular recreational season all year. Partway through the season, usually around early-May, players who are interested can try out for the competitive add-on. Making a competitive team means additional practices and tournaments on top of the regular recreational schedule, giving more advanced or committed players a chance to develop further while still being part of their recreational team throughout the year.
Players will tryout and be selected through a series of skills and gameplay sessions. Coaches alongside the Minor Director will select players for our competitive teams.
Once the team is finalized players will be notified if they have been selected or not.
